Impact Events

Impact Events

Each League year, Junior League of Calgary members participate in a number of Impact Events in our community. These events are typically a one-time event of limited duration designed to provide immediate impact to meeting a need in our community. Impact Events often are held in support of programs with community partners with whom the Junior League of Calgary has established relationships through previous programming. However, Impact Events are also planned to promote development of relationships with new community partners. Recent Impact Events have included:

Hygiene Products Drive – The Alex and Highbanks Society

In an effort to provide at-risk women with dignity, to help young mothers struggling with poverty to have more financial resources for their children, and to let at-risk women in our community know that other women care about them, in Spring 2018 the Junior League of Calgary donated hygiene products provided by members and friends of members to The Alex Youth Health Centre and to Highbanks Society residents. This Impact Event was first implemented by the Junior League of Calgary in October 2012 when it benefitted clients of The Alex Youth Health Centre.

Sandwich Drive, Calgary Drop-In Centre

JLC members prepared 594 sandwiches, from 66 loaves of bread, to provide 297 bag lunches for Drop-In Centre clients. These sandwiches allow Drop-In Centre clients who work during the day or have medical appointments to enjoy a healthy lunch. This impact event was first introduced in Spring 2016.

Birthday Treats for Highbanks Children and Moms

JLC members assembled 24 birthday party kits for Highbanks Society families. The colorful birthday kits included gifts for children and mom, decorations, paper plates and napkins, as well as cake mix, a cake pan, icing and sprinkles. Each child’s gift is a hardback Dr. Seuss book. Mom was celebrated with a day pass to Telus Spark and a pass to Southland Leisure Centre/Village Square. Transit passes were also provided First started in 2015, birthday gift kits have been distributed to children at Brenda’s House, The Alex, and Highbanks Society.

Gems for Gems

In 2018 and 2019, the JLC collected gently used jewellery to donate to Gems for Gems.  These items will be cleaned and packaged as gifts by Gems for Gems Canada, a Calgary based non-profit who will re-gift to women residing within five Calgary shelters.

My Best Friend’s Closet

My Best Friend’s Closet is a program developed by Making Changes Association, with whom the Junior League of Calgary has a long-term relationship. In 2000, JLC’s program “Suited for the Job”, which was initiated in 1996, merged with the Walk-In Closet program, which was begun by Making Changes in 1997. My Best Friend’s Closet provides teenage girls from low-income homes with a broad selection of fashionable and functional clothing to meet their school and recreational needs. In the past we have held our recruitment social at My Best Friend’s Closet. During the 2017-2018 year, 477 clothing items were donated.

Spa Night at The Alex

The Junior League of Calgary expanded our involvement and impact in the community with our first Girls’ Night at The Alex. Held initially in February 2015, the evening’s activities has quickly become of a favorite League activity. We continue to hold this event annually.
